Mr. Ray Brown Memorial
 

 

 

 

Ray Brown, City Wide Boxing Club,

Richmond, Virginia 

Departed June 12, 2007

 

Ray Brown, Head Coach, trainer, former professional middleweight of City Wide Boxing Club in Richmond, Virginia passed away 12 JUNE 2007. 

He taught hundreds of Richmond youngsters the “sweet science” of boxing for 50 years. 

He had also trained young professionals including former IBF Super Middleweight Intercontinental Champion, John Jarvis of Richmond.

2007          Virginia Golden Gloves Outstanding Novice Heavyweight

2006          Recipient of the Life Time Boxing Award

2006          Recipient of the Richmond Recreation and Parks Jesse Reynolds Award

2001          First Recipient of the USA Boxing’s Grass Roots Award

2001          2 USA Amateur Boxing Junior Championships

1998          Outstanding Novice Fighter

1997          Recipient of the Thomas Cannon Outstanding Community Achievement Award

1996          Recipient of the Fox 35 Carenet Certificate of Recognition for contributions to the Community

1995          Recipient of the Charlotte J. Harris Washington Community Service Award

1989          USA Boxing Amateur Regional Champions

1983          USA Boxing Federation Nationals Winning Team (Region 4)

1979          AAU Novice Division Titles

1979          AAU Regional Champions

1978          AAU Regional Champions

1977          7 State AAU Boxing Champions

He was featured in the 70’s Nationwide Television show “REAL PEOPLE”

 

He has traveled nationwide and all over the world with Amateur and Professional athletes.  

World travel included England, Germany, Switzerland, South Africa, London and France.

On Thursday, January 18, 2007, Coach Ben Gonzalez with I N' Motion Boxing passed away in a tragic car accident in Norfolk, Virginia on his way back home to us in Richmond.

No words can express our loss of Ben - we are all devastated. Ben brought character, skill, drive, and lots of love to everyone with I N' Motion and the Virginia Association of USA Boxing.
