Athlete Representative Athlete Representative

Brandon Mitchell of Virginia Beach
As the Athlete Representative I have such duties and responsibilities that are consistent with the Virginia Association of USA Boxing by laws and I am a voting member of the LBC Board of Directors.  My primary duty as Athlete Representative is to represent the views of the athletes in the discussions and decisions of the Board of Directors and to communicate to the boxers the issues and actions by the Board of Governors and Directors.
Basically I am your voice on the matters that affect all the athlete membership, that include but not limited to, ringside safety issues, officiating practices and rulings, grievances, fund raising, and much more. I need your feedback so that I can best represent you at the LBC Meetings. Any ideas, issues or concerns about our boxing program please do not hesitate to contact me.
Now that our website is up and running I can keep you up to date with all that affects us.  If you have any photos of boxing from events or your clubs please forward a copy of it to me and I will get them to the webmaster to post in the LBC Showcase.  Dont forget to visit our Google Group for online discussions and downloads.

2007 Athlete of the Year

Cordaro Simpkins

Team ILA, Norfolk, Virginia

19 years old

Currently attending "OFF-CAMPUS High School" of Virginia Beach

Cordaro has been a long time local favorite for the folks in the Hampton Roads area. In fact at the age of 18 he has already been boxing for 10 years. He grew up in the shadows of his older brothers boxing and after having looking at their trophies all his life he knew what he wanted to do. At first his father, Daniel Lamb, took him to a martial arts studio to "Toughen him up.". Cordaro was not satisfied with the regimen he found in the Karate dojo and decided he wanted to box like his siblings before him. Thats when he showed up at the Barraud Park Recreation Center in Norfolk Virginia.

With big dreams and a heart full of desire he trainied for the next year, under the training of Dan Campbell and and his father, in preperation for his appearance on the amateur boxing scene.  The rest is as they say "History". some of his accomplishments are as follows:

  • 150+ bouts
  • 1st and 2nd Athlete of the Quarter (FY07) Virginia Association of USA Boxing
  • Ranked #1 in the nation as a Junior Olympian
  •  7 time Virginia State Junior Olympic Champion
  • Numerous "Best of Class" titles
  • Competed in the National Silver Gloves 4 times
  • 2002 Tiger Market Invitational
  • 2004 Won the Washington D.C. Mayor's Cup
  • 2005 National Silver Gloves Champion
  • 2 time Virginia State USA Boxing Champion
  • 2007 Virginia Golden Gloves Champion
  • 2008 Virginia/North Carolina Golden Gloves Champion
  • 2 time East Central Regional USA Boxing Champion
  • 2 time Washington D.C. Region Golden Gloves Champion

He currently trains at the Internationa Longshoremen Assciation's Boxing Club, in Norfolk Virginia, under Bobby Jordan Sr.

Cordaro is a fine athlete that has a bright future ahead of him . We are proud to announce him as our "Athlete of the Quarter" for the 1st and 2nd quarter of 2007.

Athlete of the Quarter (3rd FY07)

Ricardo Mickens Novice Heavyweight

Richmond Citywide Boxing Club

Amateur Record:  7-1
Awards:  2007 Virginia Golden Gloves Novice Heavyweight Champion and Best Novice Athlete recipient

I have posted the write up that Ricardo sent me. I think it says a lot about his character. Enjoy.

Ricardo Mickins ---Write up

"Hello!  My name is Ricardo Mickins.  I graduated from Armstrong High School.  My 9th grade year I played junior Varsity Football.  Football was my life.  It was all I wanted to do at that time.  By the time I got to the 11th grade I was one of the best players on my Varsity Team.  I loved football, but the season didn’t last the whole school year.  When Football season was over I joined the Track and Field Team.  I ran track to stay in shape and keep myself occupied until the next Football season.  I made it through the 12th grade, still playing football and running track until I graduated in 2003.

Once I graduated I really didn’t do much until I started going to the gym to work out.  I met up with a Boxing Coach, who thought I would be a good Boxer.  I began training with him.  About 2 months later due to the closing of the former Gym, I moved on to City Wide in 2007.  I started boxing with City Wide Boxing Club and before I knew it I was 7:1.  It feels pretty good to have won so many of my matches; I know I have a long way to go and much to learn.  I look forward to a successful career."
